Longterm review Panasonic FZ1000, a Great camera !

The best camera is the one you have with you !

And it is for sure the best camera I ever had (in 40+ years) !

Update september 2025

The Panasonic FZ1000 is the Best Camera for Travellers, and also the Best Value for Money !

Update may 2025

This is my third (!) FZ1000. I bought the first one secondhanded in 2017 but in 2018 it was swallowed by an unexpected higher wave while timelapsing at the beach near Malaga. I bought a new one rightaway which lasted until it's screenswivel broke down mid 2024. It had lasted a Very Long and Very Extensive period. During YesTrip.nl I use my camera At Least 325 days per year, and using means several hours and in all kind of conditions Per Every Day. Early 2025 I bought the last new one available worldwide, and I am So Lucky and Happy with it !

Update early 2025

I found the last (new) Panasonic FZ1000 (worldwide ?!) and I was extremely lucky with that ! During the last half year of 2024 I did not find any new FZ1000 available anywhere worldwide anymore. Non, nada, niente, rien, nichts, niks. But suddenly there showed one up, and even in an official shop in Spain. I bought it Immediately and I am Happy Again !

History

July 2024, after some 5 years of very extensive usage (and transport), the mainscreen broke down (electrically) which means I had no swivelscreen anymore. That is an absolute no-go for me since I love to make special photos, like macro. A swivelscreen also gives you the opportunity to take "other" pictures, and that shows. But the screen died, so it was end of live for this camera for me.

Unfortunately this version 1, that I bought for € 550, was no longer for sale anywhere. And the price of the new version 2 had raised to a mere € 1000. Where it has no extra advantages for me. So I decided to look for an alternative.

I choose for the Kodak AZ652 🖱️ superzoom-camera. All it's specs are less, and also it's weight, and it sells for some € 425 mid 2024. I did not like it from the very first moment on ...

The Panasonic FZ1000 is indeed a Great Camera ! It's design is from 2014 already, but it still has little competition. The only comparable camera (that is marginally better) has about a double as high pricetag.

I am an absolute fan of the so called all-in-one, point-and-shoot or superzoom cameras. They always bring you maximum usability and quality but for a very acceptable price. A long time ago, back in 2002, I bought the Olympus C2100UZ (Ultra Zoom) and ever since I have had no doubts nor wishes anymore with this type of cameras.

Over the years I owned that Olympus C2100UZ, a Panasonic FZ50, a Olympus Stylus 1 and now the Panasonic FZ1000. I've used them all extensively and never ever had any problem. They all did/do a Great Job and I should have bought each of them more early !

SLR cameras look impressive but fact is they are expensive, bulky, heavy and slow to handle. You always (!) have the wrong lens mounted for the situation for which you should have reacted fast(er). All the years that I'm doing YesTrip I am photographing many, many days. And in all the years I've seen exactly 1 SLR camera "on the road".

The best camera for taking pictures !

With the FZ1000 you are ready to shoot within 1 second ! It weighs just under 1 kilo which mainly is caused by the superior Leica lens, but that's all you have to carry. I never use a strap and have no problem to handle weight and size all day.

It has a big sensor with 20 Mega pixels, a Leica f/2,8 - f/8 lens with 25 - 400 mm zoom, a EVF with 2,36 Mb pixels and a rotatable screen with 0,92 Mb pixels. Also it can film in 4K quality. After which you can extract high quality pictures out of the film. You could actually just film to then later select (save) the pictures you like out of that film.

This is indeed an all-in-one camera.

Below you find several sets of small pictures which will link you to the fullsize versions. All these pictures were taken by hand, so without the use of a tripod. They also are per set taken from the same point of view, they are not cropped but ("only") the zoom was used. The appartment building at the beach is even 6 kilometers away, in the next village. Which means the OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) sytem is also doing it's job.

Behind everyone of these pictures is the uncropped original picture. So click them and enjoy. With the Panasonic FZ1000 you can take them all within few seconds and without changing anything, except for the zoom !!!

Need I say more ?!

And last but not least : my favorite collection of dragonflies. Are they Beautiful !

Tip : if you are more into filming have a look at the FZ2000.

Tip 2 : version 2 (2019) of the FZ1000 is quite more expensive but does not offer extras related to photographing. But it did cause the price of v1 to drop 👍.

Verdict The Panasonic FZ1000-1 is a superior camera for those who really Go out and Shoot !

Timespan of this review : from december 2017 until spring 2024. This review concerns two cameras. I lost the first one early 2019 due to an unexpected high wave while it was taking a timelapse at the Mediterranean shoreline in Spain. That was end of life for it, but I ordered a new one the next day.

Circumstances : fulltime (250 days per year) on the road in out of the handlebarbag of my OnTheRoad 4.0 🖱️ superbicyle during my YesTrip. Or "out of my hand" while exploring an area, town, museum, zoo, garden, etc.
